Wind-powered plant, soy inks, recycled stocks. Automated online ordering
system, general turnaround is 7 days (2 weeks with shipping). Quality is
great for the price you pay. No minimum requirements. I’ve used them for
some postcard jobs I needed done in under a week, and some poster jobs
that took a couple of days longer. Good idea to request some samples first,
to get an idea of their in-house stocks.

Knust specializes in color stencil printing (mimeograph), using riso or ricoh
machines with water-based inks (they mix a lot of the colors there) — very
recognizable bold color prints! They will also do pre-press and bookbinding,
everything priced for low-cost, do-it-yourself production. They also have a
little visiting-artist program, and a bookshop.

They do layflat binding as well as other forms of binding. They don’t do smyth
sewn signatures in house. Rather inexpensive as well.

Ask for Tony or Dan. These guys are great for short run or long run—
photocopy/laser print staple bound books—and their prices are amazing.
Their shop can do other stuff, like binding and colour printing, but it gets
more expensive and I’ve never actually done much of that there. But if you
need a black and white ‘zine made and trimmed to look nice, these guys are
great. I’ve made some great books and recommended designers to go
there.

This is the cheapest xerox in New York. Its 5.5 cents for double sided 8.5”x11”
and 8.5 cents for a tabloid size. I think they usually print just brochures and
pamphlets for hospitals, so they are definitely not “fine arts” printer or a place
to drop off a job with, but if you are looking just to make a small zine or
book by yourself on a standard xerox, the machines are great and it’s
super, super cheap.

Riso stencil printing, primarily working with artists and design groups, with
reasonably good turnaround, depending on the complexity of the project.

We used Duncan’s RISO to print issues 3 and 5 of Kingsboro. It is a really
amazing machine and Duncan is the greatest; he is super knowledgeable,
professional, and also awesome company!
